To know your service tax number, you must be registered with service tax department. Service Tax registration is done online and the procedure is simple.
You must have registered for service tax within 30 days from the day your service sale exceeds Rs. 9 lakh in a financial year. After registration, you can also claim exemption of Rs. 10 Lac if your total service sale does not exceed Rs. 10 lac in previous year.
You will be allotted one service tax number against one PAN, for all your branches.

What is Service Tax Number?
Once you are registered with service tax department, you will be provided with 15 digits service tax number, which act as your identity and you must quote it in every communication with the department.
The following picture shows the relevance of each digit of the Service tax registration number.
For example if your service tax number is ALTRO0564ESD002, then it means “ALTRO0564E” is your PAN “SD” is given since your are service distributor and “002” is given since you have applied for registraion of two locations.
Note : Service Distributor means a person authorize to distributes input tax credit to its branches and other offices. It receives bills/innoives and allocate the service tax input.

- Name of the Assessee
- Address of Assessee
- Location Code
- Commissionerate Code
- Division Code
- Range Code
